Tanzania Travel Advice

Health & Vaccinations:
Recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Yellow Fever, and Typhoid. Malaria is present throughout Tanzania, so it’s advisable to take anti-malarial medication and use mosquito repellent, especially at night. Most lodges provide mosquito nets. Always consult your doctor before traveling.

Visa / eVisa:
Most travelers need to apply online for a Tanzania eVisa before arrival, which typically costs $50 and is valid for 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Language & Culture:
Swahili is the national language, and English is also widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Tanzanians are known for their politeness and hospitality. Basic greetings include:

  • Habari?Nzuri (How are you? – I’m fine)

  • ShikamooMarahaba (Greeting for elders – Response)

  • JamboJambo (Hello – Hello)

Safety:
Tanzania is generally safe for tourists, especially when using reputable tour operators and guides. Avoid walking alone at night, keep your valuables secure, and use trusted transportation after dark.

Currency:
The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). However, US dollars are widely accepted in lodges, national parks, and tourist services—especially for transactions over $50. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and safari camps, but carrying some local cash is recommended for tips and small purchases.

Fun Fact:
Tanzania is home to the Serengeti, the stage for the Great Migration, and Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak—both world-famous natural wonders.
