Packing List
Pack Light. Travel Far. Remember Everything.
There’s a particular thrill in laying out your gear the night before a safari — the quiet hum of anticipation, the knowledge that in a matter of hours you’ll be tracing the edge of the Serengeti at dawn, watching the plains turn gold. What you carry should disappear into the experience, leaving you free to be fully present for it.
This list is built from years of guiding travellers across East Africa’s wildest corners. Pack thoughtfully, leave room for the unexpected, and trust that the most important thing you’ll bring home won’t fit in any suitcase.
What the Bush Teaches You About Packing
A great safari kit follows three simple rules: dress in layers, choose earthy neutrals over bright colours, and keep it light enough to live out of for days. Mornings on the plains can be crisp, midday sun unforgiving, and evenings cool again under a sky thick with stars. The traveller who layers wins.
1. Clothing — Dressed for the Wild
Soft, breathable fabrics in khaki, olive, and sand let you move with the landscape rather than against it.
– Lightweight, breathable long-sleeved shirts and trousers — your best defence against sun and insects alike
– A light jacket or fleece for chilly game-drive mornings and evenings around the fire
– Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes
– Sandals or flip-flops for unwinding at the lodge
– Swimsuit, for that unexpected plunge pool with a view
– Daily socks and underwear
– Pyjamas or sleepwear
2. Accessories — The Difference-Makers
Small things, big moments. These are what you’ll reach for when the lion finally lifts its head.
– UV-protection sunglasses
– A camera with spare batteries and memory cards — the migration waits for no one
– A power bank, because the best sightings happen far from a socket
– A neck scarf or bandana for dust, sun, and style
3. Personal Care — Comfort in the Wild
The savannah is generous, but it asks you to come prepared.
– High-SPF sunscreen
– DEET-based insect repellent
– SPF lip balm
– Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap)
– Any prescription medications, in their original packaging
4. Documents & Money — The Essentials
The least romantic items on the list, and the ones you’ll be most grateful to have in order.
– Passport and visa (where required), plus photocopies kept separately
– Travel insurance documents
– Cash in small denominations — handy for tips and local markets
– Internationally accepted credit or debit cards
One Last Thing
Leave a little space in your bag and a lot of space in your itinerary. The finest safari moments are never planned — the leopard draped over a branch at dusk, the elephant herd crossing your path, the silence so complete you can hear your own heartbeat. Bring an open mind and a sense of wonder. We’ll take care of the rest.
