Uganda Travel Advice

Health & Vaccinations:
Recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Yellow Fever, and Typhoid. Malaria is present in Uganda, so taking anti-malarial medication and using mosquito repellent is advised. Most lodges provide mosquito nets. Always consult your doctor before traveling.

Visa / eVisa:
Uganda requires travelers to apply online for an eVisa before arrival. It typically costs $50 and is valid for 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Language & Culture:
English and Swahili are the official languages, while Luganda is widely spoken. Ugandans are warm and hospitable. Common greetings include:

  • Oli otya?Bulungi (How are you? – I’m fine)

  • Gyebale koGyebale nyo (Well done – Response)

  • HelloHello

Safety:
Uganda is generally safe for tourists, especially when on organized tours. Avoid walking alone at night, keep valuables secure, and use trusted drivers or guides after dark.

Currency:
The Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is the official currency. US dollars are accepted in some lodges and tourist areas, especially for payments over $50. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels, but it’s wise to carry some local cash.

Fun Fact:
Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
