Private Boat Excursion to Nakupenda Sandbank & Prison Island — The Ultimate Zanzibar Experience

Embark on a day of history, beauty, and relaxation with this private boat trip to two of Zanzibar’s most beloved coastal gems: Prison Island (Changuu Island) and the stunning Nakupenda Sandbank. This exclusive experience offers freedom, privacy, and the flexibility to enjoy the Indian Ocean at your own pace — away from the bustle of group tours.

🚤 Your Journey Begins: Departure from Stone Town

The adventure starts from the historic seafront of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cultural heart of Zanzibar. Your private captain and crew will welcome you aboard a traditional dhow or a modern speedboat reserved exclusively for your group.

As you glide away from the harbor, enjoy sweeping views of Stone Town’s ancient coral-stone buildings, the spires of old churches, minarets, and the silhouette of the old fort. The warm breeze carries the scent of the sea and spices as your boat heads westward into the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean.

🐢 First Stop: Prison Island (Changuu Island)

A short cruise of around 20–30 minutes brings you to the famous Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. Steeped in history, this small island was once used as a place to detain rebellious slaves and later as a quarantine station for yellow fever. Today, it stands as a peaceful marine sanctuary and historical site.

🏰 What Awaits You on Prison Island:

The Giant Aldabra Tortoises: Meet the island’s most famous residents — a population of endangered Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old. You can walk among these gentle giants, feed them leafy greens, and learn about their conservation from caretakers.
Historic Colonial Ruins: Explore the hauntingly beautiful ruins of the old prison building and quarantine hospital. The remnants of coral-stone structures offer a window into the island’s complex past.
Coastal Views & Photo Spots: Wander along the rocky shoreline where the turquoise sea meets the coral cliffs. The views back toward Stone Town and across the ocean are breathtaking — perfect for memorable photos.
Snorkeling (Optional): If you wish, grab your mask and snorkel to explore the shallow reefs surrounding the island. Tiny colorful fish, sea stars, and coral formations hide just below the surface.

Because this is a private trip, there’s no rush — you can spend as much time as you like admiring the tortoises, strolling the island, or resting under the shade of large baobab and almond trees.

🌊 Second Stop: Nakupenda Sandbank — Paradise in the Sea

Leaving Prison Island behind, your boat continues to the breathtaking Nakupenda Sandbank, a true natural wonder whose name means “I love you” in Swahili. As the boat approaches, you’ll see a stretch of dazzling white sand rising from the ocean like a secret island.

🏖️ What Makes Nakupenda Special:

Endless Beauty & Privacy: With no permanent structures or inhabitants, Nakupenda feels like your own private paradise. The sand is powdery white, soft underfoot, and surrounded by clear turquoise waters that stretch to the horizon.
Swimming in Crystal Waters: The gentle, warm ocean invites you to swim, float, or simply cool off in peace. The waters are shallow near the sandbank, perfect even for non-swimmers or young children.
Snorkeling Adventures: Slip into your snorkeling gear and explore the nearby coral patches, where you can spot colorful fish darting among the rocks, starfish resting on the sandy bottom, and sometimes even rays or squid gliding by.
Beach Picnic: A freshly prepared seafood feast may await — typically featuring grilled fish, prawns, octopus, or calamari along with an array of tropical fruits such as pineapple, watermelon, coconut, and bananas. Served under a simple sunshade or canopy, this rustic beach picnic offers delicious flavors with the gentle sound of waves all around.
Time to Relax: Whether you wish to sunbathe, read a book, build sandcastles, or simply lie back and watch the clouds drift by
