What Is Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo?

A morning or afternoon guided hike through semi-deciduous tropical forest in search of habituated chimpanzee troops. Once located, you’ll spend up to one hour observing these intelligent primates as they feed, groom, play, and rise early from nests—accompanied by expert Uganda Wildlife Authority guides.

What You’ll Experience

• Expert-Led Jungle Trek: Start with a briefing, then trek 2–4 hours through undisturbed forest on winding trails overseen by knowledgeable rangers and local trackers. Expect moderate terrain with occasional inclines and muddy patches, ideal for active travelers.
• Face-to-Face with Chimpanzees: Spend 60 precious minutes mere meters away from chimps—watch adults forage, juveniles swing overhead, and families interact. This is a rare wildlife encounter rich with astonishing behaviors and social moments.
• Rich Biodiversity: Budongo is home to over 600 chimpanzees, nine primate species, 360 bird species, 450 tree types (notably giant mahoganies), and abundant butterflies and moths—making the trek a holistic nature immersion.
• Conservation & Research: The forest is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority with support from the Jane Goodall Institute. Every trek supports conservation initiatives, research efforts, and sustainable forest management.
